A full-day itinerary in Trieste combines a guided tour of the city as described in the tour "Trieste" with a visit of one or two castles along the coast.
The Castle of Miramare was the princely residence of Maximilian of Habsburgh, who became emperor of Mexico, and his wife Charlotte. It is surrounded by a beautiful park rich in rare botanical species, sculptures, ponds and paths that lead to the sea.
The Castle of Duino is the private residence of the princes Thurn und Taxis. 18 rooms are open to the public and they narrate the history of the family that still lives here. The castle is characterized by an elegant atmosphere that you can breathe strolling along its romantic paths full of ancient statues and archaeological finds or just facing the sea from one of its many terraces. An underground military bunker dating back to WW2 can also be visited.
