Trieste

Set between the Carso plateau and the Adriatic sea, Trieste is an elegant and cosmopolitan city with a strong middle-European flavor.

Founded by the Romans in the 2nd century B.C., the history and character of Trieste are however strictly connected with its Habsburgh past which is still living today through all the monuments, streets and buildings scattered around the town, and for this reason it is often nicknamed the "Little Vienna by the Sea".

Walking along the seafront (Rive) and the Theresian district, you will be impressed by the beaty of Trieste's neo-classical palaces and buildings, such as the Stock Exchange Palace, the Teatro Verdi Opera House and the imposing St. Anthony's church at the end of the Grand Canal. The Greek and the Serbian orthodox churches are also worth a visit.

Passing through the ancient Jewish ghetto we'll then reach Piazza Unità d'Italia, one of the most beautiful Italian squares overlooking the sea.
